February 2nd Devotion

Exodus 32:31-33 (NIV)
31 So Moses went back to the LORD and said, "Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold. 32 But now, please forgive their sin--but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written." 33 The LORD replied to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book. Israel had sinned a great sin against God. While Moses was on the mountain with God, Israel made a golden calf and worshipped it. Moses did a great thing and offered to have his own name blotted out of God’s book. God responded by saying that He would blot out whoever had sinned against him.

I pose two questions.

1. What is the book God has written?
2. What does it mean to be blotted out of it?

There are of course many books, but this book seems to be THE book. There is similar talk about a book, and being blotted our or removed from it. That can be found in Revelation.
Revelation 3:5-6 (NIV)

5 He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels. 6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Revelation 20:11-15 (NIV)
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 15 If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 3:5 speaks of overcomers. Who is an overcomer?

Revelation 12:11 (NIV)
11 They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.

Lord help us overcome.

Love, Pastor Don
